Abstract

The aim of this study is to contribute to the visual and representational dimension of cultural heritage by examining the sites in Türkiye declared as World Heritage Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List through philatelic designs. Data for this study, conducted using qual-itative research methods, was accessed through documents published in both printed and electronic media. First, the theoretical framework for the research was established through a literature review, followed by visual data collection by examining the stamp emission program published between 1984 and 2018. While stamp designs have been published under various titles at various times, only those bearing the title “UNESCO” were included in the scope of the study. Although Turkey has a total of 21 heritage sites inscribed as World Heritage Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, philatelic designs for only four of these sites have been published. Therefore, it is recommended that studies be conducted on topics for which no philatelic designs are currently available, and that a series titled “UNESCO Cultural Heritage of Turkey” be added to the stamp issuance program. Furthermore, it has been concluded that this series should be prepared both as an FDC and as a stamp portfolio.

Keywords: UNESCO; stamp emission program; philately; stamp desing; cultural heritage.
