Design of geometric patterns in Islamic art in the perspective of M C Escher

Abstract

The concepts of mathematics and art have been the subject of many studies in terms of definition, content and scope. Although these two concepts seem to be independent of each other, there are studies in which mathematics and its field of study, geometry, are applied as art and art directs mathematics. One of these fields of study is geometric pattern designs in Islamic art, where geometry is performed as an ornamental art. These designs are drawings made based on the rules of geometry with the help of ruler and compass. The designs reached by producing patterns on the created geometry floors are used as decoration elements in various fields. In addition, one of the most important names that directs his works by using mathematics and geometry in art performance is painter and graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher. Escher used symmetry groups, limit, paradox, hyperbolic geometry and the Poincare disk model in his art. M. C. Escher's use of mathematics as an art element has effects on encountering examples of geometric patterns in Islamic art. During his visit to the Alhambra Palace in Spain, he was inspired by the geometric patterns in Islamic art in the palace. With this inspiration, he directed his own fantastic designs and integrated the mathematical discoveries of his time into his work. Escher inspired the mathematicians of the period with these works, and Escher's works took place in some articles that gave direction to science and art. In this article, Escher's visit to the Alhambra Palace in Spain, which contains examples of geometric patterns in Islamic art, has been examined with various examples. With a similar approach, a new pattern design method has been researched by making applications with geometric patterns in Islamic art. Based on Escher's work, hyperbolic geometry was reached. It has been presented by making applications from geometric pattern examples in Islamic art on the basis of the hyperbolic geometry reached.
