Abstract

In recent years, discussions on climate crisis and sustainability have made waste reduction and sus-tainability initiatives crucial in the textile and apparel industry. In this context, many designers, engineers, and brands are developing methods to reduce waste. Zero waste fashion design is an approach that primarily focuses on minimizing waste generation in the production processes of clothing designs. The goal is to overcome the traditional methods of garment production, which can lead to waste rates as high as 15%. In this approach to clothing production, both form (product) and technical design are simultaneously dominant. Examples of this approach include pattern design techniques such as puzzles and mosaics, fabric manipulation, and minimal cutting, as well as technologies that optimize design processes like 3D modeling and digital prototyping. In the fashion design understanding increasingly prevalent in the 21st century, the synergy of form and technical design is emphasized. Knitting, especially techniques like Seamless (seamless knitting), has significant potential in reducing waste by enabling the simultaneous production of both fabric and garment without compromising on aesthetic concerns. Knitting methods, particularly seamless knitting, offer designers the opportunity to develop zero waste fashion designs without sacrificing aesthetics. The aim of this study is to examine zero waste garment design approaches aimed at preventing waste formation, explore how knitting techniques, especially seamless knitting, can be used in sustainable fashion designs, and analyze the consumer’s transition to a prosumer position.

Keywords: Environmentally friendly design; pattern design; knitting design; zero waste in textiles; sustainability in textiles.
