Abstract

This study investigates how mushrooms can serve as a resource for woven fabric design through the principles of biomimicry. Considering the increasing importance of sustainabil-ity in the fashion and textile industries, the aim of this research is to develop innovative and eco-friendly designs by utilizing the mycelial structure, natural surface textures, color diver-sity, and biological properties of mushrooms. The ecological roles of mushrooms have been analyzed and integrated into the woven design process. Throughout the process, six different woven fabric designs were developed; these were shaped both through observation-based forms and conceptual approaches interpreting the relationship of mushrooms with natureWithin the collection process, the designs evolved from a concrete design language in the initial stages to a more abstract expression in later phases. In this respect, the study is significant in demonstrating the development process of conceptual design. Moreover, in each design, functionality was prioritized along with aesthetics; natural structures were considered not only as visual references but also as sources of technical solutions. This study proposes that the biomimicry approach is not limited to imitating the visual aesthetics of nature, but also involves integrating its functional structures, systemic organization, and sustainability principles into the design process, resulting in products that offer both artistic and societal value. The research method was conducted through design-based research, one of the practice-led research methods. During the creation of the collection, six different woven fabric designs were developed by utilizing the form and structural features of mushrooms. The visual and physical data used throughout the design process aimed to provide a concrete framework for how the structural characteristics of mushrooms could be adapted to fabric surfaces. The resulting designs were evaluated as reflections of a creative design approach shaped by direct observation of nature. This study aims to propose applications of the biomimicry approach in woven textile design and to explore how biological structures can serve as sources of inspiration and knowledge in creative design processes.
