Abstract
Collection and treatment of the leachates generated in municipal solid waste landfills in a proper way is vital for the protection of the limited water sources. Hamitler Leachate Treatment Plant, which consists of aerobic and facultative lagoons and sequencing batch activated sludge systems, with 2 parallel lines and 500 m3/day flow capacity, has been constructed as a 3 stage pre-treatment plant in order to pre-treat the leachate generated in Bursa Hamitler Landfill. The technical information derived by analyzing the performance of this first leachate treatment plant constructed in Turkey is very important for the design and more efficiently operation of new leachate treatment plants. In this study, the time based variation in the characteristics of leachate generated in Hamitler Landfill and COD, BOD5 and nitrogen removal performances of the leachate treatment plant has been examined for 27 months between January 2007 and April 2009.
