Abstract

Nations’ struggle for independence was the major threat to the empires in the 19th century. The Ottoman Empire tried to define itself and demonstrate its presence through the symbols indicating particular ideologies, in the same way as other peer states did. The governors of the Otoman society seeked to exhibit these symbols and concepts that were advanced in years via architecture, which was the most popular and wide-spread medium of the day. During each Sultan's reign the long-existent state symbols were improved and used differently. These emblems were additionally foregrounded on building facades by the plastic items as the Ottoman State’s official symbols.

Keywords: 19th century; Istanbul; state; emblem; monogram; inscription; crest.
