Abstract

The art of painting in the ontological sense during the twentieth century. The painting has gained meaning as they represent, show and do not. The position of the painter turned out to determine the viewer's field of vision. Instead the painters preferred to produce images that attack the viewer's visual field. Therefore, the painting is not a window that opens to nature, but a representation of the irregularity of the visual field. Many theoretical ideas can be put forward for research. Psychoanalysis is one of them.French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan‟s concept of gaze has received considerable attention in the visual arts. The meanings of gaze are timeless, and lack a cultural context, and as such, gaze is unique to the human race. To Lacan, its meaning is an indicator of the fragility of the subject‟s centrality, leading him to define gaze from a psychoanalytical perspective. From the viewpoint of painting, gaze may be associated the ideas directing painters‟ strategies of representation, such as making visible, making present, deforming, erasing or reinforcing visibility. The look is that we don't give the exact meaning. However he will always be. A person-specific look can be matched by the evil eye.Keeping this connection in mind, this article aims to explain Lacan‟s concept of gaze, and its relationship with both psychoanalysis and art, using examples from art history. Examples have been the history of classical western painting, modern western art and contemporary art. The reason for focusing on the examples of western art in relation to the concept of view was to show the changes in the history of art or the ideas about the view. The examples presented in the article are approached from the perspective of art theory, with the aim being to understand the style of representation a painting uses, and to demonstrate what could be said abut gaze. The article concludes that Lacan and the examined painters likely had much in common in terms of their perspective of gaze.
