Abstract

20th century is a remarkable period not only with its political and social developments, but also with great advances seen in the communication technologies. Developments in the communication instruments during this century in terms of quality and quantity surely introduced so many amenities to the daily life. And same thrust is carried along to the 21st century. Now that human beings have an enormous network and digital infrastructure for communications, a wide variety of options are offered to enhance his existing conditions of contact. Although old-fashioned letters and telegrams still exist, they merged into the background by the derivative instruments, including specifically online services. Nowadays communicating by mail seems only nostalgic. But it is different for the plastic arts (or fine arts) because more and more people are attending to the activities organized for the movement known as mail art. These activities are examined from the aspect of process and execution, coupled with literature scans. Besides that exemplary activities are analyzed based on visual archive data and potential gains to be derived in Turkey from the initiatives toward mail art are evaluated.
